A 16 month time-line sounds unrealistic to me. However, paying $10 to $20 billion (I got this number from Sen. Obama) a month sounds a little high. The tax burden that will come along with this tab will be outlandish; I don’t want to pay for it. Is there some way the Iraqis can pay for this debacle. STARVING THE BEAST is in full effect!
In 2002, Senator Barack Obama led from the front and opposed the war on Iraq. He believed we could not go into this war blindly and we must protect ourselves first. Now as the Democratic Presidential nominee, he has put together a plan a 16-month timeline to bring home our troops. In this plan, we send more brigades to help in Afghanistan to fight off the reemergence of the Taliban. Once these tasks are accomplished, we can bring home our American troops.
In my opinion, the pros out way the cons. It is hard to say as my beliefs we engaged in a war that we should have never entered. Six years later 30,409 wounded and 4,124 American lives lost. A pro is we can stop the lost of lives. Everyone always talks about the 4,000 lives lost but no one talks about the 30,000 that have had there lives changed forever. We have not even spoke about the 100,000 of cases of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Another pro is our military will be able to reconstitute and recharge, as we do not know about other countries like Russia and Iran, which are becoming increasingly unstable. There are also a few cons; one is Iraq may not be able to recover. There are bands of terrorists just waiting to reenter the country once the U.S. occupancy is gone. Is it safe? Will this country be able to protect its nukes, terrorist camps?
Senator Barack Obama plan is to end this war. In his timetable, his plan is if elected President he will give the Joint Chiefs of Staff a new mission and that is to end this war – “responsibly, deliberately, but decisively.” In that, he would bring home two brigades a month from Iraq. If we needed to add a brigade to Afghanistan that would happen. There are other decisive decisions he will need to make. Do we need a Joint strike force to ensure Al Queada does not put a foothold on Iraq, how long, and will we need a U.S. troop presence in Iraq and Afghanistan?
Iraq’s Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has also stated that he is in favor of a timetable for a removal of U.S. troops. That being said they are in negations for a long-term security pack that would indeed have a U.S. presence into the future. This is the best for the two countries. The War in Iraq is costing this country 12 billion dollars a month. We need to put that into our infrastructure of this country in repairing roads, bridges, and more education for our children.
In conclusion, Senator Barrack Obama’s 16-month timeline to bring home our American troops great plans for us as a Nation to get back to normalcy and do what is most important and that is protect our country. In that I have been proud the way our American troops have put this country on their back and have supported and protected us.
