Most people in this world talk about sports, politics, war. According to the U.N. some 18,000 children die every day because of hunger and malnutrition and 850 million people go to bed every night with empty stomachs. Why isn't this a topic of concern?

What causes world hunger? This is a conversation you do not usually have in front of the water cooler at work. After reading the two articles attached with this assignment I started to brainstorm of on the topic. The articles definitely brought many issues to light. The more I though about it, the more I started to believe this is something that needs to be talked about more. There are many underlining issues and until people bring topics like this to the forefront, they will not be addressed.
There is no doubt “Money” is the driver of this ship when it comes to why there are people starving in this world; so there is no reason for anyone to not be able to eat. As I thought about money being the main issue, I cannot remember a day when I have not been able to eat or afford to get anything to eat. I am blessed for that, but I know and I have heard many stories of people starving and having to steal food. For example, the article spoke about how until we stop looking at food as a commodity we will be stuck in this never changing game. If you cannot afford to eat in this country you will starve.
As someone who has never smoked or used tobacco in his life I can still see why people are diverting huge amounts of land and going into the tobacco industry. In a world where one billion people smoke or use tobacco products people cannot deny this is where the money lies. No one cares about the affects it not only has on people but the effects on the environment. Again, people in this world do not think about how to stop world hunger. Most people think about how they can get rich.
Like in Richard H. Robbins book where he talks about “when food is treated as a commodity, then it is those who can afford to pay, that will get food”. Again, it is not the rich and middle cases that are starving it is the poor impoverished people of the world. In this great country of the United States its inflavable to understand how we can spend 12 billion dollars a day on a war but we cant stop hunger, increase education, or fix bridges or freeways.
In conclusion, this all leads to the word “Money”. This is what powers the world. It is a sad thing to see but this is reality. Until world hunger becomes that water cooler talk and we bring this to the forefront of this country many will starve, many will die.
